How to sew the sides in a crib: two easy ways

Soft sides or “bumpers” for a crib are a practical and necessary accessory that will protect the baby from unforeseen injuries and protect him from drafts.

Soft side of 4 parts

You will need:

  • Cotton of three colors: for external and internal parts of the sides, as well as for ties;
  • Synthetic winterizer;
  • Scissors;
  • Sewing thread and needle;
  • Tape measure;
  • Tailor pins

DIY envelope for a newborn


Step 1

Measure the crib around the perimeter and write down the dimensions of the length and width of the crib, as well as the height of the side.

Step 2

From cotton of two different colors, cut out 4 rectangular pieces of a size equal to the length of the crib and the height of the side.

And 4 side parts equal in size to the width of the crib and the height of the side.

Allowances for all sections - 1.5 cm.

Step 3

Cut out the ties of the desired length - 10 strips (three for long parts and two for side parts) and sew them.

Fold each strip in half, iron and open.

Unscrew long sections inward exactly to the middle of the strip and fold the part in half again, iron and grind.

Step 4

Pin the ties in the corners from the front side of the outer parts of the side. Additionally, one tie and in the middle of a long side part.

Fold the external internal parts of the rim with their faces facing each other, chop or sweep.

Stitch the details around the perimeter, leaving a small opening for turning out.

Turn out the details.

Step 5

From the synthetic winterizer, cut out the internal parts for the side (the size is the same as for the main parts, only without allowances).

Step 6

Through the open holes of the side parts, insert the synthetic winterizer parts. Sew the holes manually with a blind stitch or with a sewing machine.

Edge made of components with edging

You will need:

  • Cotton of three colors: for external and internal parts of the sides, as well as for ties;
  • Synthetic winterizer;
  • Scissors;
  • Sewing thread and needle;
  • Tape measure;
  • Cotton cord;
  • Tailor pins

Step 1

Measure the crib around the perimeter, as well as the height of the side and write down the dimensions.

Step 2

From cotton of two different colors, cut out 6 rectangular pieces equal in size to the width of the crib and the height of the side.

Allowances for all sections - 1.5 cm.

Step 3

Cut out the ties of the desired length - 24 strips and sew them.

Fold each strip in half, iron and open.

Unscrew long sections exactly in the middle of the strip and fold the part in half again, iron and grind.

Step 4

Cut out a sufficient number of slanting strings with a width of 4-5 cm.

Stack with each other.

Sew the hem with the zipper foot.

Step 5

With tailor's pins, pin the ties in the corners on the front side of the outer parts of the side.

Step 6

On the entire perimeter of the outer part from the front, pin or catch a piping.

In the places of rounding, cut edges of the edge.

Step 7

Fold the external internal parts of the rim with their faces facing each other, chop or sweep.

Stitch the details around the perimeter, leaving a small opening for turning out.

Cut corners and twist parts.
